Chincoteague Virginia is well known for its excellent
quality oysters. Clear salty Atlantic water pours thru
Chincoteague Inlet with each tide, giving local oysters an
excellent environment for growth. The island is surrounded
by natural and cultivated oyster bars and reefs.
Visitors to the area will delight in sampling local
oyster dishes and all the excellent fresh seafood that
Chincoteague is known for. Oysters are prepared in several
ways and even eaten raw on the half shell.
Other oyster meals include steamed oysters in the shell,
single fried oysters, oyster stuffing, oyster stew and more.
Oysters can be purchased in the shell by the bushel or
shucked and stored on ice. Several local markets carry fresh
oysters and vacationers choose from several oyster entrees in
almost every Chincoteague Island restaurant .
