As its name implies, the rock bass prefers rocky bottoms where it preys on crayfish and other invertebrates.

This small but formidable member of the sunfish family is often found together with smallmouth bass.

Rock bass are similar in appearance to other members of the bass-sunfish family including green sunfish, warmouth, and Roanoke bass.

Their bright red eyes explain their other common names; red-eye, red eye bass, google eye, and others.
