Fishermen's Dishwasher Disaster

We recently had a dishwasher failure as water would drain from the unit. After a fair amount of cursing and labor, we finally got the unit out for testing, only to find out that removing it was un-necessary.

It turns out that the "anti siphon valve" up on the sink was plugged with 15 years of fish bones. The drain water passes thru a small diameter tube, then has to make a 180 degree turn to go down. The slender fish bones had passed thru the pump but could not negotiate the turn due to their shape.

After hours of work to track down a few tiny bones, all is well once again.
