The sika deer is a non-native species that occurs in a number of locations throughout the Mid Atlantic region.
Sika deer are smaller, but resemble elk in stature. Adults typically measure around 30 inches in height at the shoulder and weigh from 45-110 pounds.
Unlike whitetails, adult sika deer are marked with white spots. Sika stags have stout, upright antlers which are usually forked in larger individuals.
Sika deer populations are established in Maryland on Assateague Island as well as on the mainland of the Eastern Shore in Worcester and Dorchester Counties. Sika Deer also occupy the Virginia portion of Assateague Island and nearby barrier islands.
Despite their small stature, sika deer are highly prized by hunters for their attractive racks as well as their high quality meat.
