Popular species include striped bass, bluefish, speckled trout, gray trout, croakers, dum, flounder, Spanish mackerel, king mackerel, cobia, jacks, spadefish, bonita, false albacore, tunas, dolphin fish, sharks, and others.

Fly fishing is popular in saltwater estuaries such as the Delaware Bay, Chesapeake Bay, Pamlico and Albemarle Sounds, and small coastal bays. Fly fishermen also target anadromous species such as American shad and river herring as they ascend into rivers.
