Fishing for Pompano

Pompano appear in summer off the coast of Virginia and can be caught from Chincoteague Island southward. In July or August, look for pompano to appear in the surf. Pompano are caught close to the beach using sand fleas or small pieces of crab or shrimp. Pompano are drawn to piers and can be caught around the pilings close to the surf line. Piers such as the Virginia Beach fishing pier and the Seagull Pier are good places to target pompano. Normally the first big Hurricane will send the fish south in a hurry.
