mummichog minnow

From New York to North Carolina, mummichogs, killifish, and other small baitfish are simply known as “live minnows” or “bull minnows”.

They are a top bait for catching flounder (fluke). Minnows are sometimes used for catching other species of saltwater fish such as striped bass, bluefish, and weakfish.

Live minnows are available at most saltwater tackle shops. When waterfront access is available, they can be caught with small mesh minnow traps.

If kept cool and moist, minnows can survive in a bait bucket or small cooler for long periods of time.

For flounder, live mummichogs or other minnows are usually fished on top and bottom rigs, Carolina rigs, or single hook leaders.

In some areas, medium to large mummichogs are used to catch northern snakeheads. Live mummichogs are fished under a float or live-lined near vegetation or other cover where snakeheads are likely to lurk.
